Carl Jung’s understanding of the self and consciousness provides a framework for how our soul awakens the psyche of the mind. He saw that humans shared similar stories or archetypes even though they did not interact with each other. He called this the collective unconscious. As we become more conscious, we shed light on the archetypal stories held within the collective unconscious. To do this we must journey within to meet both the self and the soul. This chapter identifies seven levels of consciousness. First is the intention of the soul to become human. Second is the awareness of self; this process of individuation experiences the duality of light and dark, as well as he, she and they. Third is the personal unconscious, the part of us that holds our shadows or hidden desires carried by the anima (female desire within male) and animus (male desire within female) by making peace with our shadows we become more conscious and able to heal the stories we fear within our self. Fourth is personal consciousness; this occurs when our psyche is balanced and open to becoming aware. Fifth is the collective unconsciousness, the part of our subconscious self that is shared with all human beings and carries the collective shadows of humanity. Sixth is the collective conscious, which becomes a unifying force for all of us to heal the collective stories of mankind. Seventh is the awakened self that is fully actualized as both a human and a soul. This occurs when we see ourselves as one who is interconnected to all.

This image identifies seven levels of consciousness as it unfolds from our root chakra to our crown.
Root Chakra – intention of the soul to become human.
Sacral Chakra – awareness of self that sees the duality of light and dark, masculine and feminine.
Solar Plexus Chakra – personal unconscious, the part of us that holds our shadows or hidden desires carried by the anima (feminine desire within males) and animus (masculine desire within females) by making peace with our shadows we become more conscious and able to heal the stories we fear within the self.
Heart Chakra – personal consciousness; this occurs when our psyche is balanced and open to being aware of our self in search of our soul.
Throat Chakra – the collective unconsciousness, the part of our subconscious self that is shared with all human beings and carries the collective shadows of humanity.
Third Eye Chakra – the collective conscious that becomes a unifying force for all, as we heal the collective stories of mankind.
Crown Chakra – the awakened self that is fully actualized as both human and divine, male and female. This occurs when we realize that we are each interconnected and interdependent as one with all. Our self and soul are one.
